Dr. Ivan Kovačević

Anthropology and Ethnology, Professor Emeritus

Dr. Ivan Kovačević is an eminent Serbian anthropologist and ethnologist and professor emeritus at the University of Belgrade, with a rich bibliography and academic career. Having first started teaching at the University of Belgrade in 1980, he brings over 45 years of academic experience to the Institute, including over a decade as Chair of the Ethnology and Anthropology Department of the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade. During his career, he influenced and led theoretical and methodological innovation in the then-traditional field of Serbian ethnology.

 

Prof. Kovačević’s focus is on social anthropology, sociology, history of ideas, semiotics and film, and he’s written over a dozen books on these topics. He is a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Ethnography Institute of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts. Currently, he serves as the editor-in-chief of Issues in Ethnology and Anthropology. He was previously also the President of the Ethnological Society of Serbia between 1983 and 1985. Between 1997 and 2000, he was President of the Board of the Belgrade Drama Theater, and between 2004 and 2007, a Board Member of the Historical Institute of Belgrade. Between 2007 and 2010 and again between 2013 and 2015, he was President of the Humanitarian and Social Sciences Council of the University of Belgrade.

 

The New York Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (NYIHSS) is honored to welcome Dr. Ivan Kovačevic, one of the most distinguished anthropologists and ethnologists, to its academic community. Bringing more than four decades of internationally recognized scholarship, institutional leadership, and theoretical innovation, Dr. Kovačevic will serve as Editor-in-Chief of Seminality, the Institute’s international peer-reviewed journal. His appointment significantly strengthens NYIHSS’s scholarly publishing program, enhances its research infrastructure and international academic profile, and further advances the Institute’s commitment to excellence in interdisciplinary humanities and social sciences research.
